In February of 2003, a local group of eight certified
and apprentice literacy trainers met to explore the possibility of forming a volunteer
literacy council. This council would be devoted to offering cost-effective quality
training tailored specifically for organizations with their own potential students and
tutors.
The group met weekly. Using their own resources, and calling upon their own extensive
tutoring, training and administrative expertise, they wrote a charter and by-laws,
established an office, assembled training and office supplies, and applied for affiliation
with ProLiteracy of America, Inc. By June of 2003, the fledgling group was able to conduct
its first workshop at the Community Corrections Division as Literacy Pros of Jacksonville,
Inc.
In 2004, the original board expanded, a book of tutor resource materials was compiled,
three on-going programs were in place, funds were collected, and Literacy Pros was
recognized with national, regional and local awards for the inmate peer tutoring program.
Literacy Pros of Jacksonville, Inc. continues to develop, carefully addressing literacy
needs and finding new ways to deliver literacy training to the community.
